Beware of Pity is the only full length novel written by Austrian author Stefan Zweig. When I heard that three of my least favorite actors were going to be in a movie together, I knew I had to see it. First published in German in 1939, in 2011 it was republished by Pushkin Press in a new translation by Anthea Bell. And pity the non-Jews who share their faith with a Jew, for they will not just be treated like a pariah, but nobody will come to their aid, and their life on this planet will be shortened. Published in 1938, it takes place in a couple of years leading up the assassination of the Archduke in Sarajevo. To genuinely practice compassion, we must insure that our resources are used to their best purpose, something other than bankrupting our nations with superfluous costs. Even the Dalai Lama has warned us to beware of pity. Still, Beware of Pity is gripping to say the least. Once again, this book is not my favorite by Zweig. I found Stefan Zweig's ' Beware of Pity' as I was mooching around the bookshop opposite the University of Leeds. It was a no-brainer, meant for me like candy for children or porn for teenage boys. I love browsing bookstores in the flesh, as opposed to the online experience. I knew that I would love Beware of Pity before I picked it up. He was a journalist and essayist, primarily, and Beware of Pity is a remarkable foray into fiction. Already this autumn, as I may have mentioned before, we've had the epic adaptation of Grossman's Life and Fate; now we have an adaptation of another top favourite book of mine, Stefan Zweig's Beware of Pity. Confusion has to be one of the most stunning books I've ever read.
